Maggie - Session Volunteer

I have been volunteering at the Newbury Soup Kitchen for almost a year.  I thought that I was going to be pouring soup into a cup and handing it out with a bread roll.

How wrong could I be?

Soup is indeed handed out from our van every Saturday, but a full two to three course meal is provided every Thursday together with stocks of food which can be taken away.  However, food is only one part of the work done by this wonderful team of volunteers.  The largest part of the work is provided by many volunteers who are qualified to give mental health and substance abuse support, emotional support, outreach support, dental and treatment from a foot specialist and haircutting. Practical items are supplied: shoes and clothing, shower and laundry vouchers, personal hygiene items, housing applications, form filling, furniture, – the list is endless.
