Sophie - Session Volunteer
I initially applied as a volunteer for Newbury Soup Kitchen to help those who are eligible to apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or are in need of support to go through the appeals process. Benefit applications can be complicated and daunting and as someone with personal and professional experience, I knew I had to help.
I qualified as a mental health nurse in 2018 and have seen how mental health can be caused by or be the cause of; poverty, homelessness, addiction, loneliness, low mood and anxiety. Newbury Soup Kitchen is not just about the homeless and providing food. Aside from helping with benefits, I give my time during sessions to listen and give support to those who are in crisis or are just in need of a friendly chat.
I very much look forward to the sessions every week and enjoy working with such a dedicated team of volunteers.
